Removing barriers to learning through device access

The SNP have pledged to provide every child in Scotland with a device to get online. Including a free internet connection and the support to use it. As of mid July 2021, over 72,000 devices have been distributed across Scotland.

But how will this impact teaching and learning?

With these funds, schools were able to quickly provide laptops and Learning Management Systems for their students to continue to learn remotely and minimize disruption to education. As schools started shifting back to in-person instruction, funding priorities re-aligned as well. Dollars started being prioritized to create safe learning environments and schools turned to their largest challenge yet - Learning Loss.

There will be a long road ahead as we navigate how to best support learning recovery. Thankfully the newest American Rescue Plan Act will provide K-12 education with an additional $132 billion to do just that. But it’s now up to us to make sure our students (no matter where they’re at in their learning journey) have the supports they need in order to succeed. And it’s important that those supports work within the infrastructures and devices districts have already invested so heavily.

So as schools across Australia return to some normality, how do we ensure that the technology that we take back to the classroom is grounded in sound pedagogy and not simply replacing one process with another?

Greg has been actively involved in supporting learners across all levels of education for over 30 years. During this time he has worked as a classroom teacher, school executive, consultant, regional manager with the New South Wales Department of Education, and technology coach. 

As the Head of Education for Texthelp’s AsiaPac Team, he helps to make sure that the over half a million users of Texthelp products across the region get the most out of this technology.
