In the maths classroom, equity ensures that all students, regardless of their starting point or individual differences, has an equal chance to engage with and excel in maths concepts.
In the maths context, equity involves recognising and addressing challenges that can arise due to factors such as socioeconomic status, race, gender, and learning differences. Making maths work for everyone

As students progress through their educational journey we need to make sure they have access to the right support when they need it. This includes support with maths at all levels, especially in Higher Education where maths comes into so many courses, from nursing to marketing.
6 strategies to create an equitable maths learning environment
- Build Relationships: Establish a sense of trust and community within the classroom. Understand and respect your students' unique backgrounds and experiences.
- Use Varied Assessment Methods: Employ diverse assessment opportunities that accommodate different learning styles. This might include oral presentations, projects, and hands-on activities in addition to traditional tests.
- Cultivate Growth Mindset: Encourage students to embrace challenges, view mistakes as opportunities for learning, and believe in their capacity to improve.
- Provide Multilingual Support: If applicable, offer maths resources and instructions in languages spoken by students and their families. You can use technology to help you here if human translators aren’t available.
